Died 26/6/41. Tower Hill Memorial, London. Panel 87. Joseph Bonar was the son of the late Headmaster of Thornley St Godric's RC School.

The SS River Lugar was a 5,423-ton freighter with the firm Mungo Campbell and Co. In June 1941, loaded with a cargo of iron ore, she was part of the 60-ship convoy SL-76, heading to the UK from Freetown, Sierra Leone. About 300 miles SW of the Canary Islands, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by U-69. There were only six survivors. The Captain, 36 crew and two passengers died.
